You probably give little thought to your car's belts, but they're imperative to keeping your car's engine running. It can be useful to know more about the types of belts under your vehicle's hood. Your car's belt system has two primary players: the serpentine belt that keeps components like the alternator, water pump, and air conditioning compressor running, and the timing belt that synchronizes the crankshaft and camshaft for optimal combustion timing.

Pop the hood on your car and you'll find a mechanical marvel of moving and stationary parts that propel your ride from one place to another, including a network of belts. So, how many belts does a car have? The number of belts varies depending on the year and model of your vehicle. Most modern vehicles have at least two primary belts crucial for operation: a timing belt and a serpentine belt (also known as a drive belt). Some models may have a timing chain instead of a timing belt.

In modern vehicles, the serpentine belt, or drive belt, fulfills the same function except instead of using a dedicated V-belt to drive each accessory component, a single serpentine belt drives all accessory components. Serpentine Belt - What It Is and What It Does

Functionally, it acts as the engine's power distributor, transferring rotational force from the engine to accessory components such as the water pump, steering pump (for vehicles equipped with hydraulic power steering), alternator, and air conditioning compressor. As the engine operates, the crankshaft rotates, driving the serpentine belt in motion. This movement, in turn, helps power the accessory components.

Serpentine belt functions vary between vehicle models and engine designs. Not all of these accessory components may be powered by a serpentine belt. 

The terms “serpentine belt," “drive belt”, "fan belt”, and "V-belt" are often used interchangeably. Despite their functional similarities, they are distinct from each other. They are all belts that drive accessory systems. However, the key difference between the serpentine belt vs. the v-belt is that a single serpentine belt powers all accessory components while a set of dedicated v-belts each powers a different accessory component. V-belts are also named after the components they drive. (e.g. the V-belt powering the fan is called a “fan belt” while the V-belt powering the alternator is called an “alternator belt”.)

However, modern vehicles no longer use V-belts and instead use a single serpentine belt, or drive belt, to power accessory components, rendering V-belts obsolete because of their space-saving design and ease of maintenance. 

Over time, wear and tear can degrade the belt's condition, potentially leading to decreased efficiency or even failure of the connected accessories. Therefore, regular inspection and maintenance of the serpentine belt are essential to help ensure optimal vehicle operation and longevity. Refer to your owner’s manual for the recommended intervals/mileage at which you might need to inspect your serpentine belt.

Alternator Belt - What It Is and What It Does

Alternator belt vs. serpentine belt - are they the same? Functionally, yes, because the serpentine belt also transfers mechanical energy from the engine's crankshaft to the alternator, just as a dedicated (V-belt) alternator belt would.

Fan Belt - What It Is and What It Does

Serpentine belt vs. fan belt - are these belts the same too? The term fan belt generally references the V-belt that drives the engine's cooling fan in older cars. The primary function of the fan belt is to help draw air in through its radiator to help regulate engine temperature. Modern vehicles no longer use a dedicated fan belt. Rather, the fan is powered by the serpentine belt (along with other accessories). Some vehicles also come with electronically-controlled fans, which are not driven by any belt of any kind.

In either case, the key takeaway is that the serpentine belt, or drive belt, has replaced the V-belt in modern vehicles, such that neither a dedicated fan belt or alternator belt are needed since these roles are all fulfilled by a single serpentine belt.
